Biography

Private Chris Stackley was a veteran of World War I.  He participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France, fall of 1918.

Note from Arlan Stackley, Chris’s son.

“Dad never talked much about his war experiences.

He was in a foxhole in France when he tipped his

helmet up to blow his nose.  A bullet glanced off his

helmet leaving a crease in it.  He figured his handkerchief

drew attention to the enemy.  He never got home with his

helmet, as someone stole it aboard ship on the way back

to the U.S.  Roy Riegle (from Emporia, KS) was injured

on the battlefield and he credits Dad with saving his life.

Dad carried him off the battlefield back to medical help.”

As late as August 1981, Chris annually met with fellow

veterans in Emporia for a reunion of friends from

Company L, 137th Infantry.  The Emporia unit began

training at Camp Heritage, which was located at the

Emporia Country Club.
