Biography

Sergeant E-5 Stanley E. Greene, received the Distinguished Service Cross for saving his entire unit while serving in the Vietnam War.

The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Army, awarded for extreme gallantry and risk of life in actual combat with an armed enemy force.

Actions that merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree to be above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations except the Medal of Honor.

In the photograph, General Harold K. Johnson, then Chief of Staff of the Army, is awarding the medal to Stanley.

The photo is issued by the U. S. Army.

In Stan's honor, the following family members purchased a bench which is placed on the Liberty side of the Freedom Memorial.

The engraving on the bench reads:

IN HONOR OF STANLEY E. GREENE WHOSE HEROIC ACTIONS SAVED HIS ENTIRE UNIT WHILE SERVING IN VIETNAM.  AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS, BRONZE STAR, AIR MEDAL, AND PURPLE HEART.

Purchased by Debbie Greene, Colette, Mason, and Brooke.
