Biography

Betty Kirkpatrick volunteered for the USO (United Services Organization) during World War II.

She has included a note about that experience:

"When I was 12-years-old, I became a member of the Junior USO Group.  We performed once a month regularly, but much more often during the month when they needed longer programs.  Struther Field was active as a training base.  It is located between Winfield and Ark City.  (It is now operated by both cities as an industrial park).  Christmas in 1944 was memorable as the war had been going on so long.  When I sang, 'I'll Be Home For Christmas,' it was poignant to see the 'old men' of 18 to 20 years with tears in their eyes."
