Biography
Tech Sergeant Sterling Neff enlisted in the Army on December 20, 1944. He supervised and directed the work of the motor pool for the 695th Quartermaster Truck Company in the Southwest Pacific Theater and in Japan. Inspected vehicles to determine damage and repair work necessary. He also assigned repair jobs to mechanics, checked repaired vehicles to see that the job had been properly completed, coordinated the work of the shop and saw that all work was completed as fast as possible and well as supervised ten enlisted mechanics in routine and special duties.
Sterling started as a private in Company C, 65th Training Battalion, 14th Training Regiment, and was a rifleman. He was a Staff Sergeant as an automotive mechanic and ended up a Tech Sergeant in Motor Transportation. He served in the Philippines and Japanese theaters. Sterling was discharged from the Army at the Separation Center at Camp Beale, CA, on July 15, 1946.
Sterling married Clara Harms in February 1941. They had one daughter: Tonya Lane. They divorced in 1943. He married Helen Maye Redburn Snyder on January 22, 1947. Helen Maye Redburn Snyder had a daughter by a previous marriage which he adopted: Louella Maye Snyder.
Sterling is the son of Christopher and Florence Neff. Part of his growing up years were in El Dorado, KS.
