Biography

Frank Anderson enlisted in the Army during the Korean War Era first because he felt a call to duty; his two older brothers were already serving.  Also, he felt he would have a better chance for a job, home loan, etc., if he had the local selective service board move his number to the top of the list on December 28, 1953.  On January 8, 1954, he was ordered to report to Kansas City, MO, for induction into the Army

From Kansas City, MO, he reported to Ft. Riley, KS, for eight weeks miniumum basic training.  Frank was next sent to Ft. Bliss, TX, near El Paso.  Having just married in November before going into the service, Phyllis (his new bride) was with him.  He was assigned there for eight weeks, learning to load, shoot, and maintain the 40 mm anti-aircraft artillery weapons.  He and Phyllis shared a bedroom in a lady’s home during this time; he could get evening passes till 11:00 p.. and weekends to be together.

At the end of this assignment, he was flown in a twin engine aircraft to Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, near Columbia to train and be tested under simulated atomic warfare conditions on his next assignment at Ft. Benning, GA, outside of Columbus.  Here he lived off post with Phyllis, eating and sleeping at their apartment.

Frank served at three more military posts while at Ft. Benning: Ft. Stewart, GA, near Savannah; Ft. Polk, LA, near Leesville; and Camp Rucker, AL.

Frank was listed as a cannoneer, C Battery, 41st FA Battalion out of Ft. Benning, GA.

Frank was discharged from Ft. Benning, GA, after one year, eleven months, and twenty-nine days on January 20, 1956.

Frank was the son of John and Capitola Scobee Anderson of El Dorado, KS.
