Biography

Radioman Richard Alley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II—1944 - 1946.
"Dick" graduated from Augusta High School in the Spring of 1944 and enlisted in the Navy.  He was called to active duty shortly after and went to Boot Camp in Great Lakes, IL.  After Boot Camp, he was sent to Radio School in Los Angeles, CA.  After graduating from Radio School and having a final leave at home, he was sent to the Pacific where he was assigned to a "sub chaser," the USS SC 686, in the Philippines.
When the war ended in August 1945, his ship sent to Okinawa where it foundered in Buckner Bay during Typhoon Louise.  (Date:  20 December 1945).  It was the greatest peacetime loss of ships and lives in U. S. Naval history.
Alley was reassigned to the USS Carib (ATF 82).  He served on the Carib until the ship returned to base in California in June 1946.
