Biography
Billy E. Cox served on Board the USS Whetstone (LSD-27), a dock landing ship of the United States Navy.
The ship was named in honor of Whetstone Point, the site of Ft. McHenry, which defended Baltimore, MD from British assault during the War of 1812. The defence of Fort McHenry inspired the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner".
Whetstone was laid down on 7 April 1945, launched on 18 July 1945, and commissioned on 12 February 1946.
Whetstone earned four battle stars for Korean War service and eight for the Vietnam War.
