Biography

Private Joseph Wartick served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.  He enlisted with Company A, Sixteenth Infantry, Missouri, and was wounded in the Charge at Vicksburg.  He soon recovered and participated in General Sherman's March to the Sea, thereby dividing the South and contributing greatly to the Union's winning of the war.  He received a Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Vicksburg.  The letter announcing this award was sent from Washington DC on 14 July 1894 and read as follows:

Sir: 
I am directed by the Secretary of War to inform you that, in accordance with the act of Congress approved March 3, 1863, providing for the presentation of medals of honor in such officers, noncommissioned officers, and privates as have most distinguished themselves in action, a Medal of Honor has been awarded, by direction of the President, to you for most distinguished gallantry in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 22, 1863, while a member of a volunteer storming party which made a most gallant assault upon the enemy's works. The medal has been forwarded to you by registered mail.  Please acknowledge receipt.
